I get this question a lot so I thought I’d summarize it here!
There are many ways to counterbalance a toilet so vital energy does not escape by being flushed away from a feng shui standpoint. Here are some ways using traditional cures:
1. Run a line of red (anything red will do) around the outgoing pipe with intentions of not allowing any vital energy from being flushed away.
The problem with this fix is that sometimes it is hard to disguise the red. So, let me give you some alternatives to this:
2. Place a mirror face up on top of the toilet tank with intentions of deflecting vital chi back up instead of allowing it to be pulled down and flushed away. The mirror can be sitting there alone, or something decorative can even be sitting on it. Another alternative is to open the tank lid and place the mirror on the bottom of the tank inside (under water) with intentions of deflecting the water energy upwards, and not allowing vital chi to “go down the drain.” I’d recommend at least a 4″ diameter one, or use multiple smaller ones if that does not fit inside or on top of your tank easily.
3. Hang a crystal above the toilet or in the center of the bathroom ceiling with intentions of dispersing the energy before it has the capacity to congregate over the toilet and get flushed away. Any round, multi-faceted crystal will do (I’m not talking about a natural stone here, but instead, a leaded glass crystal.) I’d recommend a minimum of a 30 mm one.
4. Hang a large wind chime the same as the crystal. I personally prefer the crystals because they are more visually discreet, but either one will do.
This cure is especially helpful if you do not have a traditional tank.
Hope that helps!

OH my god, I have the mirror under the pipe, my mirror is face up on the floor under the main pipe of the toilet. Is this terrible
March 3, 2012 - 12:23 pm
Before you go calling anything terrible, take a breath, and check in, and think to yourself “Is this showing up in my life in a negative way?” Who know.s you may have placed something else to counterbalance something and you weren’t aware of that either. A mirror face up with intentions of lifting the chi might not be so terrible…but if you appear to (for lack of better words) be getting “pooped on” in life, then perhaps you can move that mirror up a bit.

hi karen, i read in some books that placing a big mirror outside the door of the bathroom helps. is it true?i like to put a real potted plant in my bathroom a money tree may be do you think its ok thank you…
March 3, 2012 - 8:14 pm
Hi Karen,
I keep a hand mirror with a mirror on both sides on top of my toilet … I keep the prettier etched mirror facing up, and the plain side facing down. Should I move the mirror so that one side is not facing downward on the toilet? Or should I drape the side that faces down? Thanks!
March 4, 2012 - 3:40 pm
I think that will do the trick!
March 6, 2012 - 11:47 am
Would a red toilet seat be a good idea? Or even a purple one? With the lid down that would keep chi from being flushed away, yes?
March 6, 2012 - 12:04 pm
Good from a feng shui standpoint maybe, but odd for sure from a design standpoint! How about painting the underside of the seat red instead if you want to go that route?
March 6, 2012 - 12:30 pm
Actually, the bathroom is done in light purple and green tones, see this as an example of one I thought would work: http://bit.ly/yDV6Lk Click on the Lilac color to see what I mean.

Because glass/mirror = more water, will your suggestions still work on a toilet in the fame/reputation area?
Thanks.
March 8, 2012 - 8:31 am
Yes, because of the energy quality and the “Law or reflection.” And PS, intentions is everything in feng shui.
March 9, 2012 - 1:00 pm
Not related to the toilet, rather I have a sink in my fame/reputation area. I tied red ribbons around the pipes and have candles on the window ledge behind it. Would a mirror under the pipes help?
Thanks!
March 9, 2012 - 1:47 pm
I think you’re good to go already with the red around the pipes.

Hello Karen, your book really helped me a lot.
In my family gua I have a toll wood cabinet , perfect place for it, but inside is full of different size of glasses. I think that i should put red to melt some of the metal, black for water and some yellow for earth? Does some element has to be more than another/
Thank you for changing my life
April 18, 2012 - 1:42 pm
Glass equals water not metal, so I think you’re good to go on the water and wood in the family gua! And you are welcome for whatever part I helped with!

I have a toilet line (toilet points through door at me) that crosses my body when I sleep . I keep the door shut, lid down, and have red on the pipes. I can not reposition my bed because of windows and doors on the other walls. I am having health problems and would like to know how to stop the toilet line of negative chi from affecting my health.
May 30, 2012 - 10:26 pm
Mirrors, red and crystals can do many things if you know what the y do and can get imaginative on how to use them. Mirrors deflect, red stops, and crystals disperse chi – which can be very helpful if used in this situation…like hanging a crystal between bed and toilet or running a line of red along that side of the bed with intentions of stopping chi from crossing the line…This cure guide might be helpful for you if you are getting to know what basic cures can do: http://www.karenrauchcarter.com/products/karens-cure-guide/

I understand about putting a red tape around outgoing pipes with basically clean water, but from a Feng Shui perspective do you want to block the waste from leaving? Don’t we want to get rid of our actual and energetic “crap”. Just wondering…thanks!
May 30, 2012 - 10:40 pm
Good wondering! Keep that up! Yes, it is all in the intention, or “unseen” part of the sure…that makes the seen 3-D stuff “know” what to do.

Hello Karen, my question is on the family part of my gua it happens to fall into my garage. I have a water heater in that section and also my husband keeps all his tools. Tools are metal which is bad. I placed a ceramic sun that has a moon with it as my fire to melt the metal and I also placed a green jersey in a frame and a couple of pieces of 4by 4. Would this be enough wood for or should I place some cut construction paper behind my husbands tool chest. Please advise
June 9, 2012 - 10:53 am
It all depends on the results you get as to how much you need to tweak it. If you get no results, add more wood or water, etc. If you see movement in the right direction, then let it be.

I used red sewing thread around the toilet. No one can see it! I thought about it a lot and that is the best idea I could think of. I have two mirrors next to the toilet faced up: one pretty one on the soap holder on the wall and one hidden under the vanity. I put a picture of a lotus in a gold frame with purple behind the picture. This way the flower “grows” from the toilet. Red tape around the pipes leaving the toilet, sink, and tub. Hopes this helps.

Hi —love your book and attitude of life! I live in a 2 story Duplex with 2 units. Mine is the bottom floor – I have a tricky front door situation that consists of 2 parts—My front door is down and around -underneath the steps of the upper duplex entrance.
And my entrance walk way has steps leading up to the front door landing on 2 opposite sides. Meaning the chi can come in and go right out the opposite way .
Re the porch I keep my front porch on , the door is painted red and I have a windchime in a tree to the right of the house near the door
Should I put a mirror facing up underneath my neighbors stairs to take away that “heaviness” and Should I put a red line on the top of one of the entrance ways —or block it with a tree – or plants?
Thank you so much for any suggestions you might have
Best and thank you —following your book —and I am continuing to “up grade” each area –has made a big difference and I am sure it will continue .
Christopher
Help! I need attract more Chi as well as stopping it from “going right ” down the hill !

On page 209 of your book figure 48 is almost how my house is set up except the helpful people section would be bumped out like the part that you have as not in bagua. My front door goes into the house through the bumped out section, meaning to the left of where the door is on figure 48. I have a bathroom in the skills and knowledge section and in the helpful people section. With my house this way according to figure 48 would I still set the bagua on my house the same because my door goes in to the left instead of straight in?
August 9, 2012 - 10:54 am
I’m a little twirled by your description (that’s why I have a “Customized bagua overlay” service on my website!) but based on the last sentence, I’m thinking no. Stand in the htreshold of your door and hold your arms straight out. What is in front of your house is a part of the main bagua and what is behind your arms is not – and you’d “brig it in” with a mirror if need be… hope that helps???

Hi Karen,
Love your book… Read that if you bed is facing washroom door then keep something in between to separate it to avoid negativity or a red tape around the bed frame. I am new to the house and it will take some time for us to buy a new bed and in the meantime we have placed the mattress on the carpeted floor. just wondering if I could put a red skirt with intention to stop negative chi. I keep my bathroom door and toilet seat down all the time. In my bathroom there is a window which is facing ravine and opposite the window is the big bathroom mirror. It is in relationship corner. Due to summer I keep my window opened all the time so what would be the chi in this case. is the negative chi going away through the window or positive chi is coming in but getting deflected through the mirror. We keep talking about the bathroom door and toilet seat but do not talk about the glass window in the bathroom. do they have any negative or positive affect on chi.
Please throw some light on this and what cure should I take to keep the good chi in.
September 24, 2012 - 9:01 am
Yes, the color red STOPS chi with the right intentions. And as for windows, views, etc. – everything is relative, so there is no definitive right or wrong for them…it depends on the circumstances. Mirrors double what they reflect…so if you are asking if a ravine (earth element?) is OK in relationships, I’d say it is OK…but that is really a guess without asking a ton of other questions,,,thus the reason for full consultations.

Hi Karen,
in regards to the question above by sasha, is it not possible to put a red tape at the bottom of the door from inside the bathroom which will stop the negativity to come to the bedroom and affecting health of the people. I read somewhere that if your feet are facing the bathroom door then you may suffer from leg shint. Instead of buying a foot stool or bead curtain or having something in between the bed and bathroom door. WOULD THAT WORK…. ?
October 3, 2012 - 3:58 pm
Yes. RED stops energy with that intentions.

Hello Karen
I have a picture of myself above the toilet on the wall in a shadow box frame, on the tank
I have a pinkish glass diamond large and a large brass old style key.
My question is .. Is having a picture of myself above the toilet bad ?
Sincerely
Tonya

If I could get one thing in people’s heads is that something in and of itself is not usually solely classified as good or bad (if toxic waste is on Pluto, is it BAD? for who and why?), but what it “says” to you and what is around it. If you are single and looking for love, a single picture of you alone in the frame anywhere COULD BE bad, but not necessarily (like if you have a lot more pics with you and friends than that one single picture, etc.) I cannot say if anything is good or bad unless I know what’s going on in your life and where all the stuff is, sorry.

My computer is directly under the second floor toilet bowl. What are the remedies I can do to fix this. I can not transfer either of them and I have heard that this bad especially I do a lot of work on the computer.
January 14, 2013 - 8:27 am
A mirror face down under computer or a mirror face up somewhere above the toilet with intentions of deflecting them apart.
January 15, 2013 - 8:50 pm
I have a mirror that reflects me when I am in the toilet .Is that bad? I am not able to move that mirror since it is attached to the wall.Any help?
January 16, 2013 - 11:19 am
I’m not a big fan and wouldn’t go out of my way to create that scenario, but since it is there…you could use some of those Command Hooks and possibly hand a pretty fabric over it or something like that so you do not see yourself and “double that.”
The rule – the places you spend the most time effect you the most comes in mind – make it quick in there and lesssen the impact.

I am new to Feng Shui but am at my wits end. I have been making corrections in my home for awhile now and found informtion about water under stairs. Can you tell me of a cure, my main water shut off is under the stairs in the basement and cannot be relocated. I’ve read this effects the youngest son. The house is 12 years old and all the stairs from the basement to the second floor is in the center of the house.
February 7, 2013 - 4:47 pm
You can find something about EVERYTHING if you look hard enough. My advice is to check in with the eldest son and see what’s going on before making a move. Once you know the exact situation you want to shift, then make a move. The part of the house associated with the youngest son is the front left-hand part. So if you happen to have stairs there and there is a water underneath and your youngest son is having problems (I’d guess something like being ungrounded, or over emotional perhaps?) then work with the feng shui basics, like adding earth element to stop the water element from getting overpowering, etc. Earth is the element for this front right hand area AND it helps control water element. Without seeing or hearing what you’ve really got there, that’s my best guess. Hope it helps.
