I just returned from Canada and had to show off one of my photos from Banff. I’m standing just behind the awesome Banff Springs Hotel here where you can just sit, relax, and enjoy the view. Check out those mountains. So stable, so alive yet still, so relaxing.
When you are in such a natural place as this, it is easy to feel the relating, still, strong, and majestic energies of mountains. It is also easy to see the feng shui “form, shape, and flow” that we’re always trying to assign to our man-made environments. There’s nothing at a right angle or synthetic here, and it somehow feels so good. It’s definitely something to think about when you are bringing some new-fangled material or object into your home now. Perhaps for every man-made item we add to our environments we lose a bit of that “aaahh,” relaxing mood, and inner stillness that the still, clean, mountain energy brings.
The mountain is the symbol (one of the 9 traditional cures) for the Skills and Knowledge Gua in feng shui. Its energy about being still, being calm, seeking inner guidance, and overall stability. The opposite of the traditional cure of a “moving object” if that helps you. It also is all about the energy of the earth element.
Are there any other places to have a mountain symbol besides the skills and knowledge gua? The relationship gua might need one, as it is governed by earth element. You might also use its energies for creativity and children and helpful people as earth “gives life to” the metal which governs them. You might also simply add a picture of a mountain behind you at your desk for strength (and stability,) or near your bed – especially if you find yourself not able to sleep well.
Take a look around and see if earth element and mountain symbol is something that you could use a little bit more of. You can use a calendar picture or something printed off the internet if you’ve got nothing else. Then let me know what stables out in your life!

Hi Karen. Ive just come back from the Rockies too and also have some great mountain photos, which Ive put in my career area. Ive put ones of trees/forests and a waterfall one in my prosperity corner. Is that the right thing to do? What kind of photos would be great for the other areas of the house? I have some animal ones in the south, although the are single ones. Photos aside, Ive put some animal magnets in the south west (relationship) corner – thats gotta be good right??

I always like using picture of nature in the house to help uplift the chi in it.
But the subject of the art and where it goes depends on what style of feng shui you are using. If you are paying attention to directions more, then use the flying stars style and go with those elements and directions…if you are using the black hat style (bagua oriented with door not cardinal directions) then I’d move the mountain from career to skills and knowledge or relationship gua. The rest of your choices sound pretty good (except if you are single and not loving it, then you might mind your use of single animals or subjects in the art.)
