Using Dried Flowers in Feng Shui – Q and A

"lifeless" flowers

Question: I am confused regarding dried flowers/cut branches. I have several wreaths and branches. Should I remove all of them from my home? Is there any place in the home these are OK?

Answer: First of all, now that the holidays are here, I’d like to say that if you have some dried arrangement temporarily (let’s say a month or less) adorning your table or front porch, I don’t think the chi boogie man is going to come out and get you over it. If you like the look of a temporary arrangement like that and your energies (AKA your life circumstances) are holding strong – go for it. The idea is to always be mindful of what you do have in your house though, so you can make adjustments as soon as you have a desire for something different in your life.

Now, let’s talk about the permanent stuff. First of all, step back and take a quick review of you and your family’s life. If it is going perfectly, with everyone healthy, happy, and harmoniously living in the world, and your home happens to be filled with dried flower arrangements (and has been for years), then by all means – carry on. Remember, “If it ain’t broke, I don’t fix it.” You must have some MoJo going on over there that must be counterbalancing all the dried stuff, so I don’t even want to mess with it.

But if life isn’t perfect and you have chi weaknesses in your bagua somewhere, you may want to consider doing something about the dried stuff.

The chi that you want to attract and encourage to stay around within your home is vibrant, lively and in it’s thriving state. The chi that you do not want in your home is chi that is weakened, “sleepy,” disintegrating, wilting, dying, or seemingly dead. Dried flowers, pampas grass reeds, pussy willow stems, eucalyptus branches, wood shavings, wilted fresh flowers in stinky, stagnant water, moldy and damp fireplace wood, plants with a lot of dead or wilting leaves on them (snip those leaves off!), and (dare I go here?) pet ashes and people ashes all are things in their “diminishing state” in the “circle of life.”

“Preserved plants,” like those palm trees you see in some public places where they look real but they have been injected with something to stop their growth or death, seem to test OK. (Seeds usually have an essence within them that is vibrant and therefore also makes the cut.)

Yes, I have actually done experiments on this (as it is such a touchy subject) and I have observed that when dried stuff is removed, there is a definite chi improvement. (I get  a lot of people resisting feng shui because they desperately want to keep their potpourri and crispy, crunchy arrangements.)

I invite you to experiment on your own. Remove all dead or dying items from your household and lot and track the way life goes for the next few months. If things don’t improve, you either have something that was counterbalancing the dried stuff or you have something else keeping you down (because you should see improvement.)

Stuff that counterbalances dried up, dead stuff: living things (animals, kids, plants, and heck, I’ll even throw fresh vegetables and fruits in here!,) moving items, fresh air circulation, natural light, and bright, lively colors.) Since I’m not lucky enough to see all of your homes, you’ll have to be the judge of this. Remember, feng shui is a guide, based upon years of observations of actions and results.

One last thought, think about what you are willing to allow in your home. I usually lump dried flowers in the same category as kitty litter boxes, toilets, trash cans, dust, dirt and clutter. These are all potentially negative or chi-weakening items. I usually say, if you have to have them, and you have any control over their placement, put these items in a gua that is working very well for you (and might be able to “take the hit,”) and not a gua that is already suffering from weakened chi. (a gua being the part of the home that is associated with a part of your life in the feng shui map, the bagua.)

Feng Shui Numbers – Q and A

QUESTION: Why are the numbers associated with your book different than the numbers associated with the guas of other books?

ANSWER: Because I am using the number itself as a cure. I am using the number’s vibrational quality (most commonly found in numerology) and assigning it to the gua that is most closely associated with its particular vibration. You can use this number much the same as you would a symbol of that gua. For example, the relationship gua can be enhanced with matching pairs of objects, right? So the number two  – as in a pair or a couple- aligns with that concept.

Other writers may be using the numbers in a specific sequence (and that sequence may change depending on many circumstances) or may be doing something else depending on the style of feng shui that they are describing. Like I always say, if you know how to mix and match styles, then go for it. Otherwise, I’d choose one style and work with it.

A Most Powerful Feng Shui Cure – “Other” – Feng Shui Q and A

QUESTION: On page 31 of chapter 1 in your book, it talks of “Other” being the most powerful. I do not know specifically what other (s) this refers to. Can you make clear?

ANSWER: When I speak of the cure “Other,” I am talking about a cure that works very quickly and very specifically for you. This cure can change your vibration in an instant, and possibly not do a thing for someone else. Let me give you a couple of examples:

I consulted with a gal who was a writer for several magazines. She procrastinated until the very last minute, but never missed a deadline because she had her “other” cure that would always work. She had a red baseball cap. When she could absolutely procrastinate no longer, she would don the red cap and go sit at her desk. The mere fact that she had the cap on her head gave her the confidence and where- with-all to get the writing task completed on time. That cap meant business to her. It meant there was nothing left to do but write – and write she did.

Now, that cap didn’t look or feel like it had any special powers to me. As a matter of fact, it just looked like an old red cap. But to her, it was just the ticket!

Another gal purchased a pair of Oprah’s shoes somewhere, and kept them in her closet. And whenever she found herself feeling a little beaten up by life, she got out the shoes and stuck them on her little feet. And as soon as she did, she immediately stood up a little taller, a little prouder and a little more confident. As she placed her feet in the shoes she raised her fists and said “If Oprah can do it, so can I!”

It changed her energy immediately. She got invigorated by merely putting on a pair of shoes. I don’t know if it would have worked on me, but it did her – which makes it her “Other” cure.

Do you have something that consistently represents the essence of whatever you may be temporarily missing in life? Perhaps it means “that special something” to no one else in the world but  you. That can be your “other” cure.

How to Cure Insomnia from a Feng Shui and Bau-Biology Perspective Q and A

QUESTION:I have been struggling with insomnia and headaches for 4 years. I have done all the feng shui cures that I could do in my entire house, and although I am seeing results in other areas of my life, I am not seeing any changes with this problem. Help!
Sleepless in Scottsdale.

ANSWER: Dear Sleepless in Scottsdale,
I’m answering this assuming you’ve done all the traditional feng shui things like fixed poison arrows and sloping ceilings and beams, etc. I’m glad you’ve handled the traditional feng shui items, but do you know of “the modern” feng shui items that may need to be “cured?”

You may be effected by a number of invisible energies within the home. There are EMF’s (electromagnetic frequencies – which is basically a type of radiation), electrical fields, and geopathic stress just to name a few.  When I do on-site consultations,  I test (with a tri-field meter and an e-field “buzz stick” meter) for these issues in the homes of my clients.

Without doing the proper diagnosis with the equipment,  I would recommend removing ANYTHING that is plugged in to an electrical outlet from your bed area or even bedroom. Unplug any lamps near by.  Look at what is on the other side of the wall from your headboard and see if there is anything plugged in and drawing electricity on that side of the wall as these frequencies go right through the walls. Basically, shut down the circuit of the bedroom at the circuit panel/fuse box at night when you sleep and see if that helps. And for goodness sake, if the circuit panel/fuse box is anywhere near your bed, sleep somewhere else or relocate it!

You may also be holding this electrical pattern in your body which may need to be released. There are meters to check it as well, but, without knowing for sure, let me just make this simple suggestion: go outside, and dig your bare feet into the dirt for about fifteen minutes a day and see if you get any results from that. This may help ground you and help pull some of the voltage off of your energy field/body if it is indeed present. Oh, and one last thing, try air-drying your hair, or getting one of those blow dryers like you see in some hotels where the motor is attached to the wall, and you only hold the hose with air in it. There are some low EMF blow dryers out there these days if you want to go that route, but they can be expensive.) This removes the electrical and electro-magnetic fields (from the motor) from getting dangerously close to your head. (Yes, hair dryers are spewing electrical and electro-magnetic fields all over your head while you are drying it!)

If you’ve done all that, and after a time (say a week or so?) you still don’t notice any difference in sleep patterns, then I’d get a dowser or feng shui practitioner over there and see if you’ve got geopathic stress. This is an earth radiation/energy pattern that is not conducive to health or at a minimum, sleeping well.

If you can get these invisible energy things cleared up in your home, you’ll have a way better chance of having a good night’s sleep. (I’ve also seen this same list of changes help someone who is having multiple miscarriages too!)

A Feng Shui AHA Moment

This is an AHA from one of my students in the online training course. Her client repeatedly complained that she always feels like “a fish out of water” and oftentimes “overwhelmed.” When she went into her bathroom, there were 4 mermaids hung high on the walls.

To me, there is no such thing as un-meaningful art no matter what my clients tell me! There is some subconscious reason why they chose it and display it in their environment. The “hung high” in this case, is a reflection of the overwhelmed feeling. Usually, when symbols like underwater scenes, and things that would normally be below us or under water are displayed higher than our mouths or noses (where air should be,) then feelings of “overwhelm” can be a complaint for those who inhabit that space.

So, listen to your complaints and see if you can find that very thing in your home — and then experiment by making a change or removing it…couldn’t hurt right? My motto is, when in doubt, try something else out – then wait and see the results!

Pets versus a Love Life? Feng Shui Q and A

QUESTION: We got a cat in August and I discovered I was allergic to her. I close my bedroom door to keep her out. My bedroom is in the relationship area of my house. How can I keep the ch’i flowing? Is keeping my bedroom door closed closing off any relationships? I’m a single mom and would like to encourage energy into this part of my life. Any thoughts?

ANSWER: Sometimes doors closed makes a big difference in flow of ch’i and sometimes not. So, without personally assessing the situation, here are my suggestions:

First of all, ’d let you know that getting rid of the cat would be “the mundane cure” for this situation! Sometimes people want a cure that is very obscure and transcendental when the quickest path to take is plainly obvious. Allowing something in your home environment that negatively affects your health may be something to look into. Are you putting your children’s love of this animal in front of your personal health? Has this pattern appeared in past relationships? How often do you describe past relationships as “unhealthy?” I’m just trying to get you to be mindful here – don’t spaz out about it. Just notice…

If the cat stays, then take a look at the relationship gua OF EACH ROOM to see if all is well there (you can overlay the bagua on each room just like the whole house using the door to the room to align the bagua). If the relationship gua of the house is sluggish, then perhaps you can offset the imbalance by upgrading the energy in that gua of each room. Remember, if the home isn’t supporting you, then each room can.

Next, concentrate on the bedroom itself. Observe how you’ve set up this space to work for you in regard to gaining a healthy relationship. Avoid an abundance of “single woman art” (one woman within the frame.) Try to get a fair representation of both male and female energies in your room. If the room is very feminine, add something that feels masculine. Does “he” have his own nightstand? Give the future man some space. Clean out half a drawer, half a medicine cabinet, some closet space. Help your room to accommodate “him.”

Chuck any stuff under the bed as well as remove kid stuff, work stuff, household chore stuff, and old relationship stuff from this room. If the room still feels dead or low ch’i, then possible add a chime or other “moving object” traditional cure, or even a splash of a bright color to attract new ch’i and pump up the existing ch’i. Try “igniting romance” by lighting a candle in the room. The more you give attention to your intention, the more you will attract it!
